SetiAtHome
From SeventeenOrBust
A DistributedComputing project affiliated with SETI, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. SETI@Home has placed an antenna on the giant dish at the Arecibo observatory in Puerto Rico. The antenna collects radio signals from deep space. The problem is that it takes a ridiculous amount of computer power to search the signals for signs of intelligence. SETI@Home provides software so that users can add their computer's power to the search.
This project is near the end of its life and will be switching to a newer platform known as BOINC, for which more information can be found at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/.
Visit the SETI@Home web site at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/.
PS Now Seti@home is almost useless cause one work unit is calculated by 10 - 15 participants.
